Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa opened his Sinquefield Cup campaign with a draw against American GM Samuel Sevian in the first round of the penultimate event of the Grand Chess Tour.
Playing with Black, Praggnanandhaa handled the Arkhangelsk Variation of the Ruy Lopez confidently in a largely controlled game. His preparation appeared to give him a comfortable position, while Sevian avoided taking unnecessary risks.
The players began simplifying early, with a pair of rooks exchanged as early as the 11th move. Further trades resulted in an endgame featuring queens and minor pieces, with both players retaining two knights. The queens were eventually exchanged, leaving little scope for either side to create serious winning chances.
The 48-move encounter ended in a draw, although the position had become sufficiently balanced for the players to have agreed to split the point earlier.
Top seed Fabiano Caruana was the sole winner in the opening round of the 10-player, nine-round tournament. The American defeated Dutchman Jorden Van Foreest after capitalising on a middlegame tactical error that cost his opponent a pawn.
Caruana converted the material advantage with characteristic precision and secured the full point after 55 moves, taking the early tournament lead.
World Championship contender Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan drew with Levon Aronian of the United States. Sindarov, playing White, adopted an unusual Queen’s Pawn setup and appeared to gain an advantage after Aronian dropped a pawn, but an opposite-coloured bishops endgame offered little scope for conversion.
Germany’s Vincent Keymer also shared the point with Wesley So of the United States after his attempt to attack So’s king was effectively neutralised.
Anish Giri of the Netherlands and France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave completed the day’s other draw, reaching a rook-and-pawns ending that remained competitive until the players agreed to a split point.
The Sinquefield Cup carries a total prize purse of $475,000. Praggnanandhaa will now look to build on his solid start and pursue his first victory in the tournament in the remaining rounds.
