Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final was overshadowed by violent incidents on and off the field as clashes involving supporters and players erupted following the conclusion of the tournament.
Several videos circulating on social media appeared to show confrontations between fans in different locations, while tensions also spilled onto the pitch immediately after the final whistle.
According to reports, one video showed Argentine supporters allegedly clashing with Brazilian fans, with punches being exchanged and chairs thrown during the altercation. Another clip showed police dispersing crowds near the Obelisk in Buenos Aires, where local media reported that 12 people were arrested following post-match unrest. Separate footage from Copacabana in Brazil appeared to show police using force while dealing with disturbances involving Argentina supporters gathered to watch the match.
The incidents sparked fresh debate over crowd management and fan behaviour during major sporting events. Authorities in the affected areas were seen intervening to restore order, although the exact circumstances surrounding each confrontation remain under investigation. The videos have since gained widespread attention across social media platforms as football fans reacted to the scenes of violence following the World Cup final.
Tensions were also visible on the field after Spain secured the title through Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner. Shortly after the referee ended the match, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in a confrontation with Spain defender Eric Garcia. Television footage showed Paredes grabbing Garcia by the throat, triggering a mass altercation that drew in players, substitutes and coaching staff from both teams before security personnel stepped in to separate those involved.
Despite the heated scenes, calm gradually returned as Spain began its title celebrations. Several Spanish players were seen consoling an emotional Lionel Messi after Argentina’s defeat, while Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente shared an embrace at midfield. Addressing the result after the match, Scaloni urged his players and supporters to accept the defeat with dignity, saying the team had given everything despite falling short in the final.
Spain claimed its second FIFA World Cup title with the victory, ending Argentina’s reign as defending champions. While the footballing achievement was widely celebrated, the incidents involving supporters and players shifted attention towards concerns over sportsmanship, crowd control and security at high-profile international sporting events. Authorities are expected to review the disturbances and determine whether further disciplinary or legal action is required.
