Post Holi haircare: Natural ways to restore shine and strength at home

New Delhi:  After all the colour, excitement and outdoor fun, Holi often leaves behind something none of us looks forward to—dry, dull, tangled hair. Even if you used protective oils before stepping out, gulaal, hard water from pichkaris, and long hours in the sun can make your strands rough, lifeless and frizzy.

For Indian homes, where hair oiling and natural remedies are rooted in everyday routines, post-Holi care isn’t just about repair; it’s about bringing nourishment back into the scalp and giving the hair a fresh start.

The good news? Restoring shine and softness is absolutely possible with simple, natural methods that rely on ingredients already found in most Indian kitchens. From curd and aloe vera to coconut oil and fenugreek, these gentle remedies help soothe the scalp, strengthen roots, and revive dull ends without harsh chemicals.

Post Holi haircare guide

1. Start with a gentle cleansing routine

Avoid using a strong shampoo after Holi; it strips the hair even more. Use a mild, sulphate-free shampoo to slowly remove colour and dirt. Wash twice if needed, but don’t overdo it. A cold or lukewarm rinse helps seal the cuticle and reduces frizz immediately.

2. Oil massage to repair dryness

A warm oil champi is the quickest way to bring softness back.

  • Coconut oil restores moisture
  • Olive oil reduces frizz
  • Sesame oil strengthens the roots

Lightly warm the oil and massage it into your scalp for 10 minutes. Leave it on for at least an hour before washing. This deeply rehydrates the hair after colour exposure.

3. Curd mask for instant smoothness

Curd acts like a natural conditioner.
Mix:

  • 3 tbsp curd
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Apply from root to tip and leave for 20–30 minutes. It reduces roughness, adds shine, and makes detangling much easier.

4. Aloe vera for scalp healing

Many people experience itching or a slight burning sensation after Holi due to chemical colours. Aloe vera gel cools the scalp, reduces inflammation, and hydrates dry roots. Apply fresh gel directly for 20 minutes before washing.

5. Fenugreek (methi) paste for strengthening

If hair feels weak or starts shedding after Holi:

  • Soak methi overnight

  • Blend into a smooth paste

  • Apply for 30 minutes

Fenugreek strengthens the hair shaft, soothes irritation, and boosts natural shine.

6. Egg mask for shine and bounce

If you’re comfortable using eggs, this is perfect.
Whisk one egg with a few drops of lemon juice and apply it to the hair for 20 minutes. Eggs add protein, helping restore strength after damage from colours and sun.

7. Apple cider vinegar rinse

A diluted ACV rinse (1 tbsp in 1 cup water) restores pH balance and removes any leftover colour. It also adds a beautiful natural shine and helps calm frizz. Pour it as a last rinse after shampoo.
