Portugal hand Diogo Jota’s cherished No. 21 jersey to close friend Ruben Neves

New Delhi: Liverpool are set to honour Diogo Jota’s memory by passing on his number 21 jersey to his close friend Ruben Neves. The 28-year-old forward tragically died in a car accident in northern Spain in July, along with his brother Andre Silva.

Neves is currently playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and, over the years, has played with Jota through Portugal’s youth sides, FC Porto, and Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was one of the pallbearers at Jota’s funeral, underscoring the deep connection the two stars shared.

Portugal’s manager Roberto Martinez explained that the decision has been made as a symbolic gesture to keep Jota’s memory alive every time Portugal steps onto the field. In a press conference he said, “We know what Diogo meant to each of us and the impact he had on our lives. We want to honour his memory every day. He will be with us and will be another force helping us achieve our goals. Diogo’s example is a light for us. We will carry his spirit in our hearts.”

He added, “Diogo’s absence unites us even more. He wanted to win the World Cup, and we want to honour his dream. The No. 21 shirt will now be worn by Ruben Neves, someone who had a special connection with him.”

Jota’s last appearance for Portugal came in the Nations League final triumph over Spain in June, and since his passing, his club Liverpool have permanently retired his jersey while clubs and players across the world continue to honour his legacy.

What next for Portugal?

Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Armenia and Hungary on September 6 and 9. The emotional tribute to Jota is expected to serve as added motivation for the squad as they look to begin the qualifiers on a strong note.
