Sporting CP escaped with a 1-1 draw against Primeira Liga leaders Porto as Luis Suarez struck a 100th-minute equaliser at Estadio do Dragao.
Suarez reacted fastest after a saved penalty, cancelling out Seko Fofana’s 76th-minute opener and keeping the gap between the sides at four points.
Both clubs created limited chances overall, yet each goal followed heavy pressure in the penalty area. Sporting CP finished with 11 shots and 1.29 expected goals, compared with Porto’s eight efforts and 0.77 xG. Those underlying numbers rose sharply due to the chaotic build-up before both strikes.
Porto appeared close to a vital victory in the race for a first league title since 2021-22. Deep into stoppage time, however, Francisco Moura was penalised for handball. Diogo Costa saved Suarez’s penalty, but the forward converted the rebound into an empty net, silencing many home supporters.
Earlier, Fofana had given Porto the lead after sustained pressure inside the Sporting CP area. A cross was not cleared properly, and Victor Froholdt, Alberto Costa, Fofana and Deniz Gul all had shots blocked from close range. Fofana then finally drilled his effort through several defenders, beating Rui Silva.
The opening 45 minutes contained very few clear chances for either side. Neither team produced a shot on target before the interval, with defences largely on top. Alan Varela came closest, driving a first-time strike from the edge of the box wide of the right-hand post.
The pattern barely changed after half-time, with goalkeepers mostly untested. Ivan Fresneda forced the only save before Fofana’s goal, drilling a low effort at Diogo Costa in the 57th minute. That routine stop underlined Porto’s control, as Sporting CP struggled to create meaningful openings until the frantic closing stages.
Sporting CP’s stoppage-time equaliser continued a clear trend this season. Sporting CP have now scored 15 goals in the final 15 minutes of league games, more than any other Primeira Liga club. Porto remain unbeaten in 10 home league matches against Sporting CP, though only one of the last six ended in victory.
The 1-1 result maintains Porto’s position at the top of the Primeira Liga, while Sporting CP stay within striking distance after another decisive late goal. Porto’s long home run without defeat against Sporting CP continues, yet the dropped points could shape the title race over the remaining fixtures.
