What is Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana?
PMGKAY is a big food security scheme of the Central Government, in which 5 kg wheat, rice is given free of cost to poor, migrant and needy families. In this scheme, wheat is given to the people of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Delhi and Gujarat and rice is given to the people of all other states.

The benefit of this scheme is available only to those who have AAY or Priority Household (PHH) ration card. State governments keep such families in AAY category-
- Widows, seriously ill, disabled or people aged 60+ who have no income.
- Lonely women, lonely men with no one to support them.
- All primitive tribal families.
- Landless labourers, daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, handcart pullers, rag pickers.
- Artisans like pottery makers, weavers, cobblers, sharp workers etc.
- HIV positive families who fall in BPL category.
What are the benefits of PMGKAY scheme?
In this scheme every person gets 5 kg free grains. Apart from this, 5 kg cheaper ration of PDS also continues. Ration can be got anywhere in the country (from One Nation One Ration Card). Even if you live in another state for job, work or studies, you can still buy food grains from any FPS shop in the country with your ration card or Aadhaar number.

- There is no separate application for this scheme.
- You have to go to the nearest ration shop (FPS).
