New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that he “won’t compromise farmers interest” and that “he was ready to pay a heavy price” but would never compromise the interests of its farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. The PM said that the interest of the farmers was the top priority of his government.
I will have to pay the price: PM Narendra Modi
PM Narendra Modi said, “For us, farmers’ interest is the foremost priority. India will never compromise the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I believe, personally, I will have to pay the price, and I am ready for that.”
The PM was speaking at a 3-day conference to mark the birth centenary of renowned agri-scientist MS Swaminathan. The remarks come at a time when the US has imposed additional tariffs on Indian products including 50% tariffs on agricultural products.
US President Donald Trump had signed an executive order subjecting Indian imports to an additional 25% tariffs, which is an addition to the already existing 25% tariffs on Indian products imported by America. The move comes as India refused to end its oil purchase from Russia.
Commemorative coin in honour of scientist
Meanwhile at the function to mark MS Swaminathan’s birth centenary, the PM released a commemorative coin and stamp to honour him.
Swaminathan was a renowned Indian geneticist and agricultural scientist, famously known as the “father of the Green Revolution” in India for his pivotal role in transforming Indian agriculture during the 1960s. His efforts led to the introduction of high-yielding variety seeds in India and also modern farming techniques were adopted. This led to significant increase in food production and helped alleviate poverty.
