PM Modi surpasses Indira Gandhi’s record, now second-longest-serving Prime Minister

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a historic milestone, becoming the second-longest consecutively serving Prime Minister of India.

As of Friday, July 25, 2025, PM Modi has completed 4,078 uninterrupted days in office, surpassing the record previously held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Gandhi’s unbroken tenure as Prime Minister spanned 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. With this achievement, Prime Minister Modi now stands second only to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who holds the record for the longest continuous stint.

This milestone adds to a growing list of historic distinctions for Prime Minister Modi since he first assumed the nation’s top office in May 2014. He is notably the first and only Prime Minister born after India’s Independence, the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister, and the longest-serving Prime Minister hailing from a non-Hindi-speaking state.

Furthermore, PM Modi is the only non-Congress leader to have successfully completed two full terms and to have been re-elected twice with an outright majority in the Lok Sabha. He is also the first sitting Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to secure a full majority upon returning to power. He has matched Jawaharlal Nehru’s rare feat of leading his political party to victory in three consecutive general elections (2014, 2019, 2024).

Including his extensive tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Prime Minister Modi has now served as the head of a democratically elected government for almost 24 years. This impressive run includes a unique record of winning six consecutive elections as the leader of a party – three at the state level (Gujarat Assembly polls in 2002, 2007, 2012) and three at the national level (Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, 2024).

Born into a modest family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, and having once helped his father sell tea at a railway station, Narendra Modi rose through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and subsequently the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Known for his strong communication style and grassroots connection, he has, since 2014, positioned India as a confident and assertive voice on the global stage.
