PM Modi Congratulates Lula on ‘Remarkable’ Brazil Victory, Vows Stronger Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended heartfelt congratulations to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his significant re-election as Brazil’s President.

Modi expressed confidence in deepening the strategic partnership between India and Brazil, highlighting the mutual desire for stronger bilateral relations.

Lula’s victory marks a remarkable political comeback. He secured his fourth term after defeating Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s presidential runoff. This win is particularly noteworthy as Lula had trailed in the first round, defying predictions and reinforcing his political resilience.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated, “Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory. I look forward to working closely with him to further deepen and expand the multifaceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership.”

He further added, “Together, we will continue to strengthen our cooperation across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world.” Lula is set to be sworn in on January 5, 2027, for a four-year term.

The official tally showed Lula securing 51.78% of the valid votes against Bolsonaro’s 48.23%, with 99.89% of votes counted. This victory is crucial for Brazil, as Lula faces the challenge of stabilizing public debt and navigating a Congress where Bolsonaro’s party holds significant power. The leaders last met in February this year during Lula’s State Visit to India, where discussions focused on critical minerals, digital cooperation, and traditional knowledge, underscoring the broad scope of their partnership.
