PM Modi conferred with Sweden’s Royal Order of Polar Star, receives 31st global honour

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Sweden’s prestigious Royal Order of Polar Star Commander Grade Cross on Sunday. The award is the highest honour that the Scandinavian country can give to a foreign Head of Government. This recognition marks the 31st international award received by PM Modi during his tenure, highlighting the strengthening diplomatic and economic relationship between India and Sweden.

The award is seen as a reflection of the growing ties between the two nations. The Prime Minister received the award on the first day of his official two-day visit to the country. He landed at Gothenburg Airport earlier on Sunday where his aircraft was escorted by Swedish Air Force jets before landing. He was given a warm welcome directly on the tarmac by his Swedish counterpart, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star has a long history, having been instituted way back in 1748. According to its official website, the honour is designed to recognise significant personal endeavours for Sweden or Swedish interests. It specifically rewards public activities, outstanding performance of public tasks, and dedicated service.

Focusing on trade, defence and economic ties

Shortly after landing in Sweden, PM Modi shared his agenda for the state visit on social media. “I will be meeting Prime Minister Kristersson with the aim of advancing the India-Sweden friendship in trade, investments, innovation, defence and more,” he stated.

The bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 7.75 billion in 2025 and this trip is heavily geared toward expanding those figures.

Beyond bilateral meetings, the Prime Minister’s schedule includes a wider European economic focus. He noted that he will join PM Kristersson and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to interact with top corporate leaders at the European Business Round Table for Industry, a move aimed at deepening investment ties between India and Europe.
