New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the urgent need for robust global institutions and a more prominent role for the Global South, especially as the world grapples with evolving challenges.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026, he highlighted that international bodies like the United Nations are struggling to adapt to the rapidly changing global landscape.
PM Modi pointed out that trade, technology, and sea routes are increasingly being ‘weaponized,’ underscoring the critical need for a global system that safeguards vulnerable nations from exploitation by stronger ones. He invoked the ancient Indian statesman Chanakya’s aphorism, ‘apranitah tu matsyanyayam udbhavayati,’ which describes a scenario where the absence of law and order leads to the powerful preying on the weak. “The world does not need such a situation. It needs a system that stops this ‘matsya nyaya’ from happening,” PM Modi stated.
He presented India as a model of stability, citing its humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. “During the Covid-19 pandemic, the world experienced India taking on such a role. India sent vaccines to every country in need; sent medicines to over 100 countries,” he explained.
According to PM Modi, the shifting global order necessitates more resilient global institutions, amplified representation for the Global South, and international cooperation that remains effective even during crises. He affirmed that India’s aspiration for ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047 extends beyond its borders, serving as a guarantee for a better world. “International cooperation isn’t just for good times. It must be effective during crises too. India is strengthening its own capabilities to help strengthen the world,” he concluded.
