It is 15 days time, which is also called Shraddha Paksha. It is believed that in these 15 days our ancestors come to the earth and accept the pindadan and tarpan made by their descendants. If a person does not remember the death date of his ancestors, then he can perform Shraddha, Tarpan and Pindadan on this day. This day is for all the fathers whose death date is not known. It is believed that by doing pindadan on the day of omnipotent Amavasya, all the ancestors get peace, irrespective of their death on any date. On this day, it is considered very auspicious to feed Brahmins, donate to the poor and feed the crows, cows and dogs.

Rules and laws of Shraddha

  • It is very important to follow some rules during Shraddha Karma.
  • Purpose: A person performing Shraddha should do karma only after being completely purified.
  • Right direction: While doing pindadan, one should face towards the south direction, because it is considered the direction of the ancestors.
  • Pind: Rice, milk and barley are mixed with bodies.
  • Donation: Brahmins must provide food and give them some donations and dakshina.
  • Purity: During this time, tamasic food (onion, garlic, meat) should be avoided.
