Chandra Grahan 2025: According to the Panchang, every year the Pitrupaksha (Shraddha Paksha) begins from the next day of the full moon of Bhadrapada month, which lasts till Amavasya. But this time Pitrupaksha is starting with a special astronomical event. Actually, on 7 September 2025, the second lunar eclipse of the year is going to take place and from this day Pitrupaksha will also begin. This confluence of eclipse and Pitrupaksha is considered to be very important from religious point of view.

When will the lunar eclipse take place? (Chandra Grahan 2025 Date)

The second lunar eclipse of 2025 will be held on 7 September 2025, Sunday. This eclipse will start from 11:22 pm in the night and end at 12:10 in the night. This will be a accessible lunar eclipse, which means that the outer shadow of the Earth will fall on the moon, which will make the lines of the moon slightly faded. There will be no sutak period due to the eclipse.

Will it affect Pitrupaksha?

Since it is a subclavic lunar eclipse and there is no sutak period, it will not have any special negative effects on the rules of Pitrupaksha. However, some astrologers and religious experts believe that the time of any eclipse is slightly sensitive, so during the eclipse, the ancestors should be avoided and performed Shraddha. Creating food and eating at the time of eclipse is considered taboo. Apart from this, religious rituals and auspicious works are also not performed during this period. However, the eclipse will not have any direct impact on the tarpan and shraddha works of Pitrupaksha.

Importance of Pitrupaksha

Pitrupaksha, also called Shraddha, is the time to express respect and gratitude to our ancestors. In these 15 days, we perform Tarpan and Shraddha Karma for the peace and liberation of the soul of our ancestors.

What is tarpan and how to do?

Tarpan means ‘satisfying’. In Pitrupaksha, ancestors are offered to the ancestors with water, sesame and Kush. It is believed that by doing this our ancestors are pleased and bless us.

Method of tarpan

  • First of all, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  • Take clean water, black sesame and some rice in a copper vessel.
  • Calling the ancestors, sit facing the south direction.
  • Wear Kush rings in your hands.
  • Take water, sesame and rice in the Anjuli of both hands and chant the mantra ‘Om Pitrubhaya’ thrice.
  • Now drop the water of Anjuli slowly on the ground and meditate on the ancestors.
  • While doing this action, take the name of your gotra and ancestors.

Importance of Shraddha and Pindadan

Apart from Tarpan, Shraddha and Pindadan are also performed in Pitrupaksha. Shraddha means ‘Karma done with reverence’. In this, food is prepared for the fathers and fed to Brahmins. In the pindadan, round bodies made of flour, rice or barley flour are offered, which are considered a symbol of food for the ancestors. It is believed that the ancestors get salvation by doing pindadan.
