Pitru Paksha 2025: First Shradh rules and significance in Hinduism

Mumbai: Pitru Paksha 2025 has begun, marking one of the most spiritually significant periods in the Hindu calendar. Running from 7 September to 22 September 2025 (ending on Sarva Pitru Amavasya), this fortnight is dedicated to honouring ancestors through rituals such as Shradh and Pind Daan. Devotees believe that offering prayers during this period satisfies departed souls and brings blessings, peace, and prosperity to their families.

Hindu tradition holds that performing tarpan and pind daan during Pitru Paksha ensures the happiness of forefathers and protects future generations. However, scriptures also prescribe strict rules regarding Shradh ceremonies. One of the most common questions people ask is: when should the first Shradh be performed after a person’s death? Religious texts provide clear guidance on this, along with the dos and don’ts of the ritual.

When should the first Shradh be performed?

The first Shradh is not done immediately after death. According to scriptures, it should only be performed after one full year, on the deceased person’s first death anniversary (barsi). Shradh must be conducted strictly as per the lunar date (tithi) of death. If families are unsure about the exact calculation, priests can help determine the correct date.

Significance of Shradh on the tithi

Shradh rituals are always carried out on the same tithi on which death occurred, whether in Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) or Krishna Paksha (waning phase).

Performing Shradh on the precise tithi holds great importance in Hindu belief.

If a person’s anniversary (barsi) coincides with Pitru Paksha, then Shradh performed during this time is considered especially auspicious and fruitful.

Rules of performing the first Shradh

The annual Shradh should not be performed before the first anniversary. Families must wait for one full year.

The ritual provides peace and satisfaction to the departed soul, ensuring their blessings for descendants.

Shradh ceremonies during Pitru Paksha are seen as an act of devotion, bringing divine grace and family prosperity.
