Why is Modi-Trump conversation important?

Recently, some tension was seen in the relations between India and America. Bilateral relations suffered some deterioration in July after 25% tariffs and an additional 25% penalty on Russian oil purchases were imposed. India described it as unjust and illogical as China is the largest buyer of Russian oil and the European Union is the largest buyer of LNG. The phone call came days after Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to India, highlighting the close India-Russia ties.

Currently the US team is holding bilateral trade talks in Delhi. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said talks were going on at a good pace, but no deadline had been set. Goyal said, ‘We had a very good and meaningful discussion. But an agreement will be reached only when both parties benefit. Compromising with deadlines can lead to mistakes. US Trade Representative Jameson Greer said that America has seen the best offer from India so far. On this, Goyal said that if this proposal is the best then the US administration should immediately accept it.
