Perplexity Computer brings sub-agents to handle research, docs, data, and APIs

New Delhi: Perplexity AI broke its months of silence and has now unveiled a new product that it says changes how people use artificial intelligence. On February 25, the search AI startup introduced Perplexity Computer, a system designed to unify multiple frontier AI models into a single platform that can execute complex and long running workflows .

The company is framing this launch as a shift in how we think about machines and software. In its blog, Perplexity wrote, “Today we’re introducing Perplexity Computer,” and described it as “a general-purpose digital worker that operates the same interfaces you do.”

Perplexity says AI is now the computer

Perplexity Computer is built to go beyond simple chat answers. The company explained, “Chat interfaces have answers, while agents can do tasks. Perplexity Computer is a system that creates and executes entire workflows, capable of running for hours or even months.”

In simple terms, you describe an outcome. The system breaks it into smaller tasks. It then assigns those tasks to sub agents. As the company put it, “Start by describing an outcome. Perplexity Computer breaks it into tasks and subtasks, creating sub-agents for execution.”

These sub agents can:

  • Conduct web research
  • Generate documents
  • Process data
  • Make API calls to connected services

“The coordination is automatic, and the work is asynchronous,” the company said . That means users can step away while the system continues working in the background.

Multi model orchestration at the core

As of February 25, 2026, Perplexity Computer runs Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine . It integrates Gemini for research tasks, Nano Banana for images, Veo 3.1 for video, Grok for lightweight tasks, and ChatGPT 5.2 for long context recall and search .

The company said the system can allocate tasks across 19 different models . Users can choose specific models for specific subtasks. Each task runs in an isolated compute environment with access to a filesystem, browser, and tool integrations .

“If Computer runs into a problem, it creates sub-agents to solve it,” the company noted .

I tried imagining this in a newsroom setting. Say you need a full industry report. One agent gathers data. Another drafts the copy. A third builds charts. It feels less like asking a chatbot a question and more like assigning work to a team.

Pricing and access

Perplexity Computer is available to Perplexity Max subscribers . Subscribers receive 10,000 credits per month. The company is offering a one time bonus of 20,000 credits, which expire 30 days after they are granted .

The pricing is usage based. Users can set spending caps and manage token budgets .

Perplexity positioned the launch as part of its mission to “power the world’s curiosity.” It follows earlier products like Comet, described as an AI native browser, and Comet Assistant, a personal AI agent .

The idea that AI itself becomes the computer may sound bold. But what stands out here is not just a new model. It is an attempt to orchestrate many models into one working system. Whether this changes daily workflows for businesses and developers, we will see in the months ahead.
