“People did not elect you to throw pamphlets in Lok Sabha,” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reprimands Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: A tense atmosphere was once again seen between the opposition MPs and the government during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reprimanded the opposition MPs, especially the leaders of the Congress and other parties, for sloganeering and disrupting the proceedings of the House.

Rebukes Rahul Gandhi

He told Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi that MPs are not elected by the people to wave placards or throw pamphlets but to have serious debates in Parliament and discuss issues of public interest.

During this, the opposition MPs were raising slogans on the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s voter list and were raising slogans of “SIR Wapas Lo.” The Lok Sabha Speaker asked them if they wanted to deliberately disrupt the House.

He reminded them that the opposition itself had demanded a discussion on Operation Sindoor (action by the Indian Army on the border dispute with China in Arunachal Pradesh), but now they are not allowing the House to function.

Outlandish Opposition

Om Birla said that the opposition MPs are “plannedly” disrupting the proceedings of the House, which is hurting the dignity of Parliament. He also said that the people of the country want to know whether the opposition wants to deliberately disrupt the Question Hour. He appealed to all the MPs that the Lok Sabha represents the voice of 140 crore people of the country, and it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain its dignity.

 Lok Sabha Adjourned

Meanwhile, the House was adjourned even before the discussion on Operation Sindoor began. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed displeasure over this and said that the government was ready for discussion, but the opposition put a condition at the last moment that the government should promise to discuss the SIR issue as well. He said that this method is not appropriate, because keeping such conditions just before the discussion is against the parliamentary process.
