According to the Panchang, Udayatithi has significance due to the time of beginning and end of Purnima Tithi.
- Purnima Tithi Start: 02 January 2026 at 06:53 PM.
- Completion of Purnima Tithi: 03 January 2026 at 03:32 pm.
According to the scriptures, Udayatithi is given priority for bathing, charity and fasting. Since Purnima Tithi will be present at the time of sunrise on 3 January, Paush Purnima will be celebrated on Saturday, 3 January 2026.
Puja Vidhi of Paush Purnima
Bathing in Brahma Muhurta: Wake up early in the morning and take bath by adding Ganga water to a holy river or at home.
Arghya to the Sun: After bathing, offer water to the Sun God while chanting the mantra “Om Suryay Namah”.
Resolution of fasting: Take a pledge to fast in front of Lord Vishnu.
Satyanarayan story: Listening or reading the story of Lord Satyanarayan on this day is very fruitful.
Worship of Moon God: Offer milk and water to the moon at night.
Charity: After the puja, donate sesame seeds, jaggery, blankets or woolen clothes to Brahmins or the needy.
On the day of Paush Purnima, one should avoid eating vengeful food like onion, garlic, meat and alcohol and follow a sattvik life.

Taking bath in holy rivers on this day destroys sins. From this day, ‘Kalpvas’ begins during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. According to religious beliefs, worshiping Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi on this day brings happiness and prosperity. Bathing in holy rivers frees one from sins. The results of bathing, charity and fasting done on this day increase manifold.
