Patna court conducts road-side hearing for 95-year-old bed-ridden man in bank fraud case, wins hearts

Patna: In one of the rarest occasions, a special CBI court in Patna adorned a traditional method of hearing a case in the courtroom. Instead, he heard the case on a roadside in full public view. The case was related to a 5-year-old bank fraud case, in which the same was heard against a bedridden nonagenarian.

The nonagenarian accused was lying inside vehicle

The incident was witnessed outside the Patna civil courts. Special Judge Avinash Kumar was facing an unusual situation. The accused Jai Narayan Singh was lying frail inside a vehicle. The 95-year-old was barely able to move his legs. He was unable to take even a single step towards the courtroom.

It was for nearly 35 minutes that the road leading to the court complex turned into a courtroom, as Singh was lying inside the vehicle with folded hands. During the hearing he pleaded guilty and sought the court’s amnesty, a report published in’ The Times of India’ said.

Know about the case

The case is related to a bank fraud registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2011. It involved fake borrowers and the UCO Bank employees, who reportedly rigged public money in the name of an agriculture loan in the Jamui district of Bihar. Singh was charged with getting Rs 4 lakh loan on a fraudulent basis for the purchase of a tractor, by using fake documents nearly 15 years back.

During the hearing, the judge held Singh guilty. Taking notice of the fact that Singh already refunded the entire amount of the loan to the bank and his age, the court asked him tp [ay a nominal amount of Rs 2.000. He was also spared a prison term. Singh heard the entire hearing in a lying posture.
