A22-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly travelling between Andheri and Borivali late on Monday night.
The incident took place aboard a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train, following a heated argument over shutting the train door amid heavy rain.
The shocking attack unfolded when the accused and victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, got into an argument over whether the coach door should remain open during the downpour. What began as a verbal spat quickly escalated into violence, with the accused allegedly pulling out a sharp weapon and stabbing Lohar before fleeing.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched an investigation into the incident and are searching for the accused, who reportedly escaped before the train came to a halt at Borivali station.
Dispute reportedly began over coach door during heavy rain
Lohar, was travelling in a first-class coach of Train No. 90663, which departed from Churchgate at 10.05 pm.
The train reached Andheri station at 10.42 pm, where both the victim and the accused were travelling in the same compartment. Preliminary information suggests that regarding whether the coach door should remain open or closed amid heavy rainfall.
During the altercation, the accused allegedly stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, leaving him seriously injured while the train was still moving between Andheri and Borivali stations.
Emergency response initiated at Borivali station
The train arrived at Platform No. 6 of Borivali station at 11.04 pm. Railway officials said the accused fled from the train before it came to a complete stop.
According to Western Railway, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police reached the affected coach within three minutes of the train’s arrival. By 11.10 pm, a stretcher, porter and medical assistance team had also reached the compartment.
The injured passenger was evacuated from the coach at around 11.12 pm and shifted for immediate medical attention.
Injured passenger shifted to hospital
Lohar was taken to the Emergency Medical Room at Borivali station at 11.22 pm, where he was examined by a doctor. Railway authorities, police personnel and station staff then coordinated arrangements for his transfer to a hospital for further treatment.
Acting on medical advice, officials shifted the injured passenger to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali by ambulance at 11.42 pm. RPF and GRP personnel accompanied him during the transfer. The ambulance reached the hospital at approximately 11.52 pm.
Senior railway officials review incident
Western Railway said senior officials monitored the situation throughout the night. The Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai Central) and the Senior Divisional Security Commissioner visited Borivali station at around 1 am to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the response measures undertaken by railway staff.
CCTV footage secured for investigation
Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek told mid-day.com that activated emergency procedures immediately after receiving information about the incident. He stated that RPF and GRP personnel reached the coach within minutes, medical assistance was mobilised without delay, and arrangements were made for the passenger’s prompt transfer to hospital.
Vineet Abhishek also confirmed that CCTV footage and other relevant evidence have been secured and handed over to investigating agencies.
The stabbing occurred inside a moving train between Andheri and Borivali stations, and the accused remains absconding. The Government Railway Police are continuing their investigation, and further details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
