In Part 7, we introduced the twelve Rashis and explored how their planetary lordship, Tattva and Chara-Sthira-Dwisvabhava classification contribute to the understanding of a Vedic birth chart.
We now begin our journey through the individual Rashis, starting with Mesha and moving sequentially to Kanya.
1. Mesha Rashi (Aries)
Mesha is the first Rashi of the zodiac and is ruled by Mangala (Mars). It belongs to the Agni Tattva and is classified as a Chara Rashi. Its symbolism is associated with initiative, courage, action and the impulse to begin. As the first sign, Mesha represents the emergence of energy and the movement towards new experiences. Its Chara nature reinforces its association with activity and forward momentum. In chart interpretation, the condition of Mangala and the Bhava occupied by Mesha help us understand how these qualities may express themselves in a particular area of life.
2. Vrishabha Rashi (Taurus)
Vrishabha is the second Rashi and is ruled by Shukra (Venus). It belongs to the Prithvi Tattva and is classified as a Sthira Rashi. Its symbolism relates to stability, preservation, material resources, comfort and the ability to sustain what has already been established. The fixed nature of Vrishabha reflects continuity and persistence, while its earth element connects it with practical concerns and tangible resources. Its interpretation depends on the placement and strength of Shukra, along with the Bhava and other planetary influences involved.
3. Mithuna Rashi (Gemini)
Mithuna is the third Rashi and is ruled by Budha (Mercury). It belongs to the Vayu Tattva and is classified as a Dwisvabhava Rashi. Its symbolism is associated with communication, intellectual curiosity, learning, exchange of information and the ability to engage with different perspectives. The air element emphasises mental and communicative activity, while its dual nature reflects adaptability and versatility. In a birth chart, Budha’s condition and the relevant Bhava provide important context for understanding how these qualities operate.
4. Karka Rashi (Cancer)
Karka is the fourth Rashi and is ruled by Chandra (Moon). It belongs to the Jala Tattva and is classified as a Chara Rashi. Its symbolism relates to emotional experience, nurturing, protection, belonging and the need for security. The water element connects Karka with sensitivity and the inner world, while its movable nature reflects the changing and responsive quality of emotional life. The Moon’s condition, its associations and the Bhava in which Karka falls are important considerations when interpreting this sign.
5. Simha Rashi (Leo)
Simha is the fifth Rashi and is ruled by Surya (Sun). It belongs to the Agni Tattva and is classified as a Sthira Rashi. Its symbolism is associated with authority, self-expression, confidence, leadership and the maintenance of identity and purpose. The fire element represents vitality and the impulse to express, while its fixed nature reflects consistency and determination. In chart analysis, Surya’s placement, dignity, associations and functional lordship help determine how Simha’s symbolism may manifest.
6. Kanya Rashi (Virgo)
Kanya is the sixth Rashi and is ruled by Budha (Mercury). It belongs to the Prithvi Tattva and is classified as a Dwisvabhava Rashi. Its symbolism relates to analysis, discrimination, organisation, practical intelligence and the refinement of methods. The earth element connects Kanya with practical application, while its dual nature allows for adjustment and the consideration of different possibilities. Budha’s condition, along with the Bhava and planetary influences involved, helps us understand the role of Kanya in a particular horoscope.
These first six Rashis introduce a variety of ways in which zodiacal energy can function. Mesha initiates, Vrishabha sustains, Mithuna exchanges, Karka nurtures, Simha expresses and Kanya analyses. These descriptions are broad symbolic principles rather than fixed personality labels or predictions.
It is essential to remember that a Rashi cannot be interpreted independently of the complete birth chart. The Lagna, Bhava, planetary lordship, Graha strength, aspects and conjunctions all contribute to the final interpretation. The same Rashi can therefore play different roles in different horoscopes.
