These states will be included in the first phase
Let us tell you that the first phase will include Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal, where assembly elections are to be held next year. Apart from this, SIR can also be started in seven-eight other states, which may also include states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. According to senior Election Commission officials, the SIR work will begin in the first phase in those states where elections are to be held in 2026. During SIR, the Election Commission will go door-to-door to collect information from people and settle claims and objections regarding addition or deletion of names in the voter list. Apart from this, necessary changes and updates will also be made in the voter’s photo identity card. After the first phase, the remaining states will be included gradually, so that this process is completed in a uniform and systematic manner across the country.

The Election Commission will not conduct SIR right now in those states where local body elections are being held or are going to be held soon, because the election machinery remains busy there. In such states, SIR will be in the second and final phase. SIR of voter list in Bihar has already been completed. There the final list containing about 7.42 crore names was released on September 30. Voting in Bihar will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11 and the results will be declared on November 14.
