Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is likely to register for the IPL 2027 auction as a UK national, potentially making him eligible to enter the league despite restrictions on Pakistani players.
Amir, 34, has registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) 2026 draft as a UK national. The former Pakistan international, who lives in England and has acquired British citizenship, has been placed in the Platinum category, with Pakistan listed as his country of residence.
His registration has fuelled speculation that he could also enter the IPL 2027 auction using his British passport. There is a precedent for this, with former Pakistan international Azhar Mahmood featuring in the IPL between 2012 and 2015 for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders as a British passport holder.
Whether any franchise shows interest in Amir will be known only when the auction takes place. The IPL mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
Amir, who has played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is, last represented Pakistan in June 2024 during the T20 World Cup.
Registering as a UK national could also help him avoid seeking a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The board has reportedly rejected NOC requests from several Pakistani players seeking to participate in the APL amid diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
