Pakistan military kills 145 militants in counter-attacks after BLA rips apart Balochistan

New Delhi: In more than 40 hours, Pakistan’s security forces have reportedly killed 145 militants in deadly operations. The attack by the security forces began after several coordinated attacks across Balochistan took place that killed dozens of security personnel and civilians.

Operation launched after a series of attacks

The death toll of 145 militants included those slain during raids on Friday and Saturday, and also others killed in ongoing combing operations. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti revealed this information in a news conference in the provincial capital, Quetta. He reportedly said, “This is the highest number since Pakistan is facing this war on terror.”

The series of attacks in Balochistan killed 17 law enforcement personnel and 31 civilians. They took place almost simultaneously across several districts, including Quetta, Gwadar, Mastung and Noshki, and the Baloch Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for those attacks. As a result, the army, police and counterterrorism units launched large-scale operations against the militants.

Pakistan blames India, MEA refutes claim

Pakistan’s military has alleged “Indian-sponsored militants” executed the attacks, with the Defence Minister further cementing the claim by saying the attackers enjoyed links to India. He told news agency AFP, “Even now our security forces are engaged in mopping-up operations.”

India has refuted Pakistan’s allegations, with Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal saying, “Instead of parroting frivolous claims each time there is a violent incident, it would do better to focus on addressing long-standing demands of its people in the region.”

On Saturday, the Baloch Liberation Army announced the start of Operation Herof’s second phase. The fight between the militants and security forces is only increasing, with the latter combing affected areas on Sunday. The authorities have suspended mobile internet service across the province.
