‘Paid promotion’: Delhi Police dispel missing girls reports, warn of action for ‘creating panic’ for money

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday sought to dismiss reports about the surge in missing girls in the city and said that the claims were being pushed through “paid promotion”.

“After following a few leads, we discovered that the hype around the surge in missing girls in Delhi is being pushed through paid promotion,” it said.

The Delhi Police further warned of strict action against individuals involved in creating panic for money. It is also considering filing an FIR in connection with the matter.

“Creating panic for monetary gains won’t be tolerated, and we’ll take strict action against such individuals,” it said in a post on X.

Over 800 people missing in Delhi in first 15 days of 2026?

Citing Delhi Police data, PTI news agency on Thursday claimed that 500 women were among 800 people who went missing in the national capital since the first 15 days of 2026. The news agency said more than 800 people were reported missing in Delhi, with women and girls accounting for nearly two-thirds of the cases.

From January 1 to 15, as many as 807 people were reported missing, with an average of 54 people going missing every day. The missing persons include 509 women and girls, and 298 men.

Of the total reported missing, 191 were minors, while 616 adults were reported missing, as per the data.
