New Delhi: A video shared on social media ignited a discussion on the paan spitting habit of many Indians. The clip stated that the UK was seeing a rise in paan stains on public properties like roads and common dustbins, etc. Netizens, including desis, were miffed. They blamed the indians’ lack of civility.
The clip shared on the Instagram account of Harrow Online addressed the challenges faced by the residents and their uproar. It stated that tobacco and paan spitting stains were becoming common in several areas from Rayners Lane to North Harrow. The video showcased hues of red splattered on the pavements, posts and dustbins. The residents in the area reported that it has increased after shops in the area began selling paan. With the rising sights of such stains, residents even protested the opening of a new paan shop. Undoubtedly, the video ignited a conversation relating to the habit.

Many instantly blamed Indians for the stains. Many desi netizens also joined the online discussion and requested fellow Indians not to do such things and tarnish the community’s name. One wrote, “One of the reasons the Indian passport is losing its dignity.” Another wrote, “We don’t need other people to destroy the image of India. Our people are already doing their best work across the whole world.” Some specifically criticised certain communities. They blatantly named and shamed them online.
“If they can’t respect their own homeland, how do you expect them to respect this land?” asked one user. Another person said, “It is so disgusting. I wish they would stop. This is the UK.” Netizens also came up with punishments that could be implemented to tackle the issue.
One individual suggested, “Catch and make them clean instantly the stains and a fine of £100 on first offence, more for repeat offenders.”
