New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar shone with the bat as India set a 374-run target for England in the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Oval in London on Saturday, August 2.
The Men in Blue suffered early blows in the last session of Day 2 as Josh Tongue removed KL Rahul for 7 with a good length delivery which nipped back in, and Rahul poked the ball, and it went straight to Joe Root. Atkinson dismissed Sai Sudharsan with a good length delivery which was angling in, and the batter failed to keep his bat down on time as the ball hit him on the knee roll, and the finger went up straightaway.
Akash Deep and Yashasvi Jaiswal put up a solid batting performance in the opening session on Day 3 and forged a 107-run partnership for the third wicket. Akash Deep was removed by Jamie Overton for 66 with a short delivery. Team India suffered another major blow as Atkinson dismissed in-form Shubman Gill on 11 runs with a length ball which nipped back in sharply and hit onto the front pad below the knee roll.
Karun Nair also failed to score runs as Atkinson removed him for 17 with a short-length delivery, which generated steep bounce and surprised the batter. Jaiswal notched up his 6th Test century and helped India to take a healthy lead. He was batting brilliantly, but tried to hit an upper cut on a short delivery, and Overton took a great catch at third man as Tongue picked up his second wicket.
Jadeja and Jurel stitched a 50-run partnership, and the all-rounder also completed his half-century. Jamie Overton dismissed Jurel for 44 with a good length delivery which nipped back in, and the batter was caught in his crease. The ball beat the outside edge and hit him on the back leg just above the knee roll. Tongue removed Jadeja and Siraj, but Sundar batted well and completed his fifty. He was dismissed by Tongue for 53, who completed his maiden five-wicket haul.
