Oval Test, Day 3: Nightwatchman Akash Deep falls at stroke of lunch after maiden fifty as India extend lead

New Delhi: Jamie Overton removed Akash Deep on the brink of lunch as India post 189/3 in the first session of Day 3 against England in the fifth Test at The Oval in London on Saturday, August 2.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Akash Deep put up a solid batting performance in the opening session and forged a 107-run partnership for the third wicket. Akash Deep smashed his maiden half-century and became the first Indian nightwatchman to score 50-plus since Amit Mishra (84 runs) against the same opponent at the same venue in 2011.

Akash Deep scored 66 runs off 94 balls and was dismissed by Jamie Overton with a short delivery. He looked to get on top of the bounce and play it into the leg-side, but the ball took the leading edge of the bat and lobbed up towards point, where Atkinson took a simple catch.
