New Delhi: Indian skipper Shubman Gill signed off from the England Test series on a high after scripting multiple records on the third day of the fifth and final match at The Oval. Though his knock was underwhelming, as he threw his wicket after scoring 11 runs off9 balls, yet the right-handed batter achieved number of milestones as India continued their good run with the bat.
In a total of 10 innings, the dashing Indian skipper scored 754 runs with a highest score of 269. With four centuries under his belt, he boasted a fantastic batting average of over 75 to finish the five-game affair on a high. These are one of the best figures scripted by a visiting skipper in an away Test match or on English soil. Oval Test didn’t prove good for Gill as he was out on 21 in the first innings while followed it with 11 runs on Saturday.

Gill’s stellar stats
- Gill (754) elevated to the second spot in the list of most runs scored by a captain in a Test series. While he had surpassed Sunil Gavaskar in the first innings, he overtook Graham Gooch (752) in the second innings. Donald Bradman leads the list with 810 runs.
- Gill scored the second-most runs amongst Indian batters in a single Test series. Gavaskar’s 774 against West Indies remains the highest.
- Gill also became the first Asian batter to score over 700 runs in a Test series in England.
- At the age of just 25, Gill completed 6000 runs in international cricket in his 145th innings. Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar had attained the landmark in 152nd and 157th innings respectively.
- Gill has the joint-most hundreds scored by captains in a single bilateral Test series (4), with Bradman and Gavaskar being the other ones.
