Oscars 2026: Conan O’Brien’s monologue mocks Timothée Chalamet and streaming giants

Oscars 2026: The 98th Academy Awards kicked off with laughter and lively energy as host Conan O’Brien returned to the stage with a witty opening monologue. Known for his sharp humour and relaxed delivery, the popular comedian wasted no time setting a playful tone for Hollywood’s biggest night.

As soon as he appeared on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the veteran comedian began mixing industry observations with quick-fire jokes.

Conan O’Brien takes a funny jab at Timothée Chalamet

One of the standout moments from the monologue came when O’Brien addressed a recent debate sparked by comments made by actor Timothée Chalamet about ballet and opera. The host cleverly turned the online discussion into a punchline that drew laughter across the theatre.

“Security is very tight tonight,” O’Brien joked early in the show. “There’s concerns about attacks from the ballet and opera communities.” He then aimed the next line directly at Chalamet, who was seated among the nominees and guests. With perfect timing, the host added, “They’re just mad you left out jazz.” The camera quickly cut to Chalamet, who appeared amused by the playful jab and laughed along with the crowd.

O’Brien continued to keep the atmosphere light by joking about the changing landscape of entertainment. He also directed a humorous remark at Ted Sarandos, who attended the ceremony for the first time.

In a mock impersonation of a streaming executive, the host quipped about modern viewing habits shaped by streaming platforms. “Why are they all together enjoying themselves? They should be home alone, where I can monetise it,” he joked.
