Strong debate on SIR and voter list irregularities

Earlier on Wednesday, a vigorous debate was witnessed in the Lok Sabha between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The main topic of debate was Rahul Gandhi’s claim of ‘vote theft’. Targeting the opposition, especially Congress, Amit Shah said that the reason for the party’s defeat is not in EVM or voter list, but in the opposition’s own weaknesses. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of 19 lakh fake votes in Haryana and raised questions on the lack of transparency in the election process. He also accused the Election Commission and said that ‘vote theft is anti-national.’

Rahul Gandhi’s counterattack in Lok Sabha

After the opposition’s walkout from the House, Rahul Gandhi said, ‘You saw the Home Minister’s reply, it was completely defensive. He did not give any answer to the questions we raised. I demanded sharing of transparent voter list and EVM architecture, but he did not say a word. The Election Commission has been given complete immunity. Rahul Gandhi, while discussing election reforms in the Lok Sabha, also said that there are many irregularities in the voter lists in Bihar and Haryana, which include lakhs of duplicate voters. He also presented the example of a Brazilian woman’s name being registered 22 times in Haryana.

Amit Shah’s answer

Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha that the SIR process is the responsibility of the Election Commission and the government has no control over it. He said this process had also happened several times during Congress governments, including the SIR during the reigns of Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Shah warned the opposition and said that the government never shies away from debate and answers every issue in the Lok Sabha with complete transparency.
