‘Opened a massage parlour?’: Three Arunachal women allege racial abuse by neighbours in Delhi

New Delhi: Three women from Arunachal Pradesh have alleged that they were subjected to racial slurs, humiliation and intimidation by their neighbours following a dispute over repair work at their rented flat in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Police have registered an FIR against a couple in connection with the incident.

According to a PTI report, citing police, the altercation took place around 3.30 pm on February 20, when the women had called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor flat. During the drilling work, dust and debris reportedly fell onto the floor below, resulting in objections from their neighbours, identified as Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain.

The confrontation began over the falling debris escalated into a heated argument, during which the women alleged that the couple hurled abuses and made derogatory and racial remarks targeting them.

Video of incident goes viral

Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media. In the footage, the accused woman can be heard asking one of the women if she was running a “massage parlour”. She can also be allegedly heard using terms such as “gutter-chaap” and making remarks about people from the Northeast.

At one point in the video, the accused woman is heard saying, “Teri aukaat nahi hai… custom officer ka beta hai woh… politician ka beta hai (You have no standards. He is the son of a customs officer… a politician’s son).”

One of the women is seen confronting the couple, saying, “Everyone heard what you said about my image. You made false allegations that I drink alcohol. Go check my room if you find any bottles there.”

No arrests made so far: Police

A police officer was present at the spot during the altercation and is seen in the video attempting to pacify both sides.

An FIR has been registered at Malviya Nagar police station under sections 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (common intention) and 196 (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain. Section 196 is a non-bailable and cognizable offence.

“No physical injuries were reported. However, the complainants have alleged mental harassment and humiliation,” a senior police officer told PTI. No arrests have been made so far, and further investigation is underway.
