New Delhi: OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teachers, a specialised version of its AI chatbot designed specifically for servicemen in the field of education. The introduction is one of the most significant steps that the company has made into the school system that can assist the teachers in their collaboration with AI in a secure and efficient way. The platform is an effective way to plan lessons, analyse student work, manage tasks and collaborate, all while maintaining data privacy. According to OpenAI, the system is meant to assist teachers at a time when the classroom is full of debates on the topic of cheating, a gap in learning, and responsible use of technology.
The tool will be implemented in a range of school districts that will involve close to 150,000 teachers. In the US, verified K-12 teachers are free to use the platform up to June 2027. OpenAI also states that the entire information uploaded to the educator workspace will be confidential and will not be utilised to train its models, a major point of assurance to school administrators worried about student data and data compliance requirements.
Is ChatGPT for Teachers free?
For now, yes. Those educators who confirm their position by SheerID can utilise the platform free of charge until mid-2027. According to OpenAI, this is a long free window to allow schools to experiment with the implementation of AI in everyday operations. The company can introduce pricing after 2027, although the company has made a commitment to schools to give them early notice and affordable plans.

Key features for educators
ChatGPT Teacher has increased limits of use and access to GPT-5.1 Auto. The search, upload, creation of images and connecting the tool with Google Drive, Microsoft 365 and Canva are some of the features that help teachers. Instructional preferences (grade level) can also be stored in the system to accelerate lesson plans and customise the workflow.
The workstation is compliant with FERPA regulations, and the information of students is not exposed to the risks of intrusion. The district administrators may also assert domains, control sign-ins using SAML SSO and rules related to the way the teachers use the tool. This provides the schools with greater control compared to the consumer form of ChatGPT.
Educators have the opportunity to make their own GPTs and post them to their colleagues. The website also presents example prompts created by other educators, so beginners can get to know how to use AI. According to OpenAI, the launch is based on its previous educational capabilities, such as the Study Mode, which was launched in July to college students.
The service is getting implemented in various large school districts, such as in Capistrano Unified in California, Dallas ISD in Texas and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. According to OpenAI, it is the next big move in its long-term vision to help make effective and responsible use of AI in schools.
