Onion and garlic turned sour in the married life which was going on without any major problem. After the breakdown of marriage of 11 years, this incident of getting official divorce has happened in Ahmedabad.

The smell of onion and garlic caused more tension than its price.

This family was not affected by the rising prices of onion and garlic, but the smell of onion and garlic put this family to sleep. The couple was married in 2002. Everything was fine in the beginning of the marriage. There was coordination in eating and drinking habits also. The husband had no problem with all types of food and the mother-in-law also never demanded any special food. But the wife was a devotee of Swaminarayan. Therefore, due to her religious beliefs she did not eat onion and garlic. She had been following this rule strictly. But the husband and his mother-in-law used to eat food containing onion and garlic.

In the beginning everyone had started eating food without onion and garlic. But, from time to time, mother-in-law would sometimes prepare onion-garlic dishes. This is where the problems started. Eventually, different types of food started being prepared in the same house. Food started being prepared separately for the husband and mother-in-law and separately for the wife. With this, fights started over small matters and gradually the fights started increasing.

The wife went to her parents’ home with the child.

When the fights became too much, in 2013 the wife went to her maternal home with her child. All efforts of Panchayat and talks failed. Therefore, the husband filed for divorce in the Ahmedabad Family Court. After a long hearing, the family court approved the divorce in 2024. Also, ordered to pay maintenance allowance to the wife.

The husband knocked on the door of the High Court

The husband’s lawyer argued in the High Court with further evidence that the wife herself had left the house and we were eating food without onion and garlic with her. At the same time, the wife said that she has no objection to divorce, but he should be given maintenance allowance. The husband agreed to pay the outstanding amount in installments. With this the High Court divorced the couple.
