Why is the festival of Onam celebrated?
Onam is especially observed for good crop yield in the fields. According to a legend, Lord Vishnu took Vamana avatar to establish Indra Dev’s authority over heaven. In Tretayuga, the Asura king Bali took over the three worlds on the strength of his penance and power. The gods were disturbed by his power. The gods sought help from Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf Brahmin (Vamana) and reached his place of sacrifice to King Bali. Bali was performing a huge yajna at that time and he promised that he would fulfill someone’s wish.
In the form of Vamana, Lord Vishnu asked for three steps of land. In the form of Vamana, Lord Vishnu in his first step, the entire earth, the heavenly in the second step, and for the third step, when no place left, the sacrifice put his head forward with devotion. Lord Vishnu placed the third step on the head of the sacrifice and sent it to the Hades and made him the ruler of Hades. Pleased with the devotion and commitment of the sacrifice, God made him the ruler of Hades.
This festival is celebrated every year on this day, in view of the generosity and dedication of Mahabali, Lord Vishnu allowed the only wish of King Bali to meet his land and people once every year. Therefore, during this time it is believed that Mahabali’s homecoming is celebrated every year as Onam in Kerala.
