On this day, July 3, 2025: Shubman Gill smashes double century in second Test against England in Birmingham. It was the 2nd Test match of the series played at Birmingham.
India were down 0-1 after losing the opening match of the series. Indian captain Shubman Gill stood up to the occasion as he smashed a double century to put India on top against England. India went on to win the match by massive 336 runs and levelled the series 1-1. Shubman Gill was the player of the match and it was a memorable day for him.
India posted 587 in the first innings of the Test as Shubman Gill smashed 269 before getting dismissed. Shubman Gill batted for almost two days as he scored 269 runs from 387 balls. His innings included 30 fours and three sixes. He looked in complete control throughout the knock and set the tone for India. Gill walked in to bat at 95/2 and built partnerships with others as India posted 567 on the board in the first innings. Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal also got their half centuries.
England were in early trouble having lost half their side for just 84 runs. They were five down and Harry Brook along with Jamie Smith counter attacked. The duo added 303 run partnership for the sixth wicket as they helped England post 407 in the first innings. Harry Brook scored 158 while Jamie Smith was unbeaten on 184 as the tail got blown away.
India had a very good lead and they ensured to pile on the runs as they scored 427/6 before declaring the innings and set England a target of more than 600. Shubman Gill was the star once again as he scored 161 and it was another stunning performance. Akash Deep picked up six wickets in the fourth innings as England were bowled out for 271 and India won the match by 336 runs. Shubman Gill was the player of the match.
