New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday dismissed the bail plea of Olympian Sushil Kumar in a murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. Wrestler Sushil Kumar and some others were accused of fatally assaulting Dhankar and his friends over a n alleged property dispute at the Chhatrasal Stadium in May 2021.
Additional Sessions Judge Sushil Kumar was hearing the bail application filed by the Olympian wrestler but he announced his decision against the celebrated athlete. Meanwhile as per the post-mortem report of the victim, he has suffered cerebral damage from the impact of a blunt object while two of his friends were also injured in the alleged assault.

Sushil granted bail twice since 2021 arrest
Following the assault, Sushil was arrested in May 2021 and a sessions court back then granted him an interim bail of a week for his knee surgery in July 2023. Again in March 2025, he was granted a regular bail but since then, he has been lodged at the Tihar jail in New Delhi.
Back in October 2022, a trial court framed charges against Sushil under the Indian Penal code (IPC) sections dealing with murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation and rioting with a deadly weapon. Charges were also framed under the provisions of the Arms Act.
The same court also noted that after being abducted and brought to the stadium, Dhankar was severely assaulted by several accused persons with baseball and hockey sticks.
