Ola Electric has taken a major step forward with its flagship electric motorcycle, the Ola Roadster X Plus and this development is important because it shows how Indian companies are building advanced EV technology right here in the country.
Ola Electric has announced that the Roadster X Plus has received official government certification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989. The approval was granted by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT) in Manesar, which means the electric motorcycle has passed all required safety and performance checks and is now legally ready for sale and delivery on Indian roads. With approvals in place, Ola says deliveries will begin in the coming weeks.
What makes the Roadster X Plus special is its indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery. This is the first electric motorcycle in India to get government certification using a fully in-house battery cell made by an Indian manufacturer.
The Roadster X Plus comes with a large 9.1 kWh battery pack, which Ola claims can deliver a range of up to 501 km on a single charge. This is one of the highest claimed ranges for an electric motorcycle in India. According to Ola, this long range is possible because of the high energy density and better heat control of the 4680 Bharat Cell technology, which means the battery can store more energy and stay cooler, improving safety and efficiency.
An Ola Electric spokesperson called this certification a major milestone, saying it shows the company’s focus on building end-to-end EV technology in India. The goal, Ola says, is to increase EV adoption in India’s two-wheeler market, where motorcycles and scooters dominate daily transport.
Ola’s 9.1 kWh battery pack has also received ARAI certification under AIS-156 Amendment 4, which includes strict safety tests. These tests check how the battery performs in situations like water immersion, fire exposure, vibration, heat and mechanical shocks which are the conditions that are common on Indian roads.
In terms of performance, the Ola Roadster X Plus can accelerate from 0-40 kmph in just 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 125 kmph. It is currently priced at Rs 1.30 lakh (ex-showroom) and is offered with 9.1 kWh and 4.5 kWh battery options.
