Pansies are known for their distinctive flowers, often featuring contrasting colours and dark markings that resemble little faces. They are particularly suited to cool weather and can bring variety to small gardens with their purple, yellow, white, blue and multicoloured blooms.
How to grow them: Pansies prefer cool conditions, fertile soil and good drainage. Place the pots where they receive morning sunlight and some protection from harsh afternoon heat, particularly in warmer parts of India.
These compact plants are suitable for window boxes, small containers and garden borders. In regions where October remains hot, wait until temperatures become more suitable before planting them outdoors.
5. Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums, often called mums, are among the most recognisable winter garden flowers. Their blooms come in several colours, including yellow, white, pink, red and purple, with varieties ranging from compact button-shaped flowers to larger decorative blooms.
How to grow them: Choose a spot with good sunlight and well-draining soil. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, keeping the foliage as dry as practical. Provide enough space for air circulation to help reduce fungal problems.
You can grow chrysanthemums in containers or garden beds. Select varieties suited to your local climate, and buy healthy nursery plants if you want a quicker start than growing them from cuttings.
