Now patients suffering from blindness will also be able to read books! Know how this medical miracle happened

Blindness Treatment: A new medical miracle has given patients suffering from blindness the ability to see and read again. Doctors in London installed an electronic eye implant called Prima System, due to which 85% of patients are now able to recognize words, numbers and faces.

Eye Implant for Blind: A new medical miracle has given patients battling blindness the ability to see and read again. An international medical trial conducted in London, Britain has shown a new ray of hope to the world. An electronic eye implant named ‘Prima System’ is now giving the power to see and read again to those who had lost their eyesight.

How does this microchip implant work?

This microchip, which is just 2mm x 2mm (as small as a SIM card), is surgically implanted under the patient’s retina. This chip works together with Augmented Reality (AR) glasses. These glasses contain a video camera, which records the frontal view and sends it to the chip in the form of an infrared beam. From there the signals reach the brain, due to which the patient starts seeing words, numbers and faces through artificial vision.

Amazing in medical research

This trial was jointly conducted by experts from University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital. This experiment was conducted on 38 patients in five European countries. About 85% of the participants are now able to read numbers, alphabets and words. Patients who could not even see a vision chart earlier are now able to read up to five lines on an average. The results of this study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which describes it as a new beginning in artificial vision.

In which disease was this experiment done?

The patients on whom this trial was conducted were suffering from a disease called Dry Age Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD). In this, the cells of the retina gradually start dying, due to which the central vision of the person gets destroyed and gradually complete blindness occurs. About 5 million people worldwide are suffering from this disease and till now there was no cure for it.

This is the turning point of medical history – Doctor

According to Dr. Mahi Mukit of Moorfields Eye Hospital, ‘This is the first time that a device is giving people the vision to read and recognize even after blindness. This is not just an operation, but a means of returning the light of life. He told that this surgery can be done by any trained surgeon in less than 2 hours, due to which this technology will be accessible to common patients in the coming time.

How is the surgery done?

In this process, first a surgery called vitrectomy is performed, in which the vitreous gel inside the eye is removed. Then a small trapdoor is made under the retina, in which this microchip is placed. After about 1 month, when the eye has completely healed, the device is activated. The AI-generated system converts visual data into electrical signals and sends it to the brain and from there the vision is experienced. This device is considered to be the biggest medical breakthrough so far. In the coming years, this technology could prove to be a gamechanger for patients suffering from dry AMD and blindness around the world.
