Novak Djokovic Drops Big Hint on Retirement at Indian Wells Open

Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis great who has won 24 Grand Slam titles, said his retirement depends on two essential ingredients: the inner “fire” to compete and the “flair” to challenge the sport’s best players.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has played only one tournament so far this year but delivered a strong statement of intent at the Australian Open. Djokovic reached the final in Melbourne after producing a remarkable performance in the semifinals against rising Italian star Jannik Sinner. The Serbian veteran edged past Sinner in a gruelling five-set contest before falling short in the final against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

Now 38, Djokovic is currently set to play at the Indian Wells Open in California. Seeded third in the tournament, he will begin his campaign in the second round against Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak after receiving a first-round bye.

Speaking ahead of his opening match in the California desert, Djokovic reflected on what continues to motivate him at a stage when many of his contemporaries have already bid farewell to professional tennis. Interestingly, he dismissed the notion that his primary drive is to surpass the all-time Grand Slam tally held by Margaret Court.

Instead, Djokovic emphasised that his decision to remain on tour depends on whether he still possesses the competitive energy and creative edge needed to match the elite of the ATP Tour. As long as those qualities remain, the Serbian icon believes there is little reason to consider retirement.

Djokovic pointed to his recent performances in Melbourne as proof that he can still compete with the new generation of stars. The hard-fought semifinal victory over Sinner, followed by an intense final against Alcaraz, reinforced his belief that he remains capable of performing at the highest level.

“It was an incredible feeling to be able to beat Sinner in five sets in one of the epic matches that I played in recent times in Australia,” Djokovic said in California.

“And then have another great match with Carlos, who was just too good in the end. For me, that has been a phenomenal result.

“I have proven to myself primarily and to others that I can still compete at the highest level and beat these guys.”

For Djokovic, those moments provide the strongest motivation to keep going. As long as the competitive spark continues to burn, the Serbian legend appears determined to remain a formidable presence on the ATP Tour.
