The Indian cricket team has been announced for the Asia Cup 2025, but this time star batsman Shreyas Iyer has neither got a place in the 15 -member main squad nor is he in the list of standby players.
This decision has been surprising for cricket fans, especially when Iyer’s recent performance has been fantastic. Due to which Team India Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar gave the reason behind not choosing Shreyas Iyer during the press conference.
Why Shreyas Iyer did not get the place?
Shreyas Iyer recently captained Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and took his team to the final. This season, he also performed brilliantly with the bat and was the player to score the most for his team. He scored 604 runs at an average of 50.33 of 17 matches. Apart from this, Iyer also played an important role for the Indian team in the Champions Trophy 2025. This tournament was also played in Dubai, where the Asia Cup is to be played. In this tournament, he was the highest run -scorer batsman for India and contributed to win the title to the team. Despite these achievements, his neglect for the Asia Cup 2025 has raised many questions.
In such a situation, the Chief Selector of Team India Ajit Agarkar clarified the reason for not joining Shreyas Iyer in the team. He said, ‘It is unfortunate that Shreyas Iyer has missed out on making a place in the team. There is no fault in this, nor ours. Shreyas will have to wait for his opportunity. It is clear from Agarkar’s statement that the selection committee has taken this difficult decision due to strategic reasons, but no question was raised on Iyer’s talent and contribution.
Waiting for return from 2023
Let me tell you, Shreyas Iyer has played 51 T20 matches for Team India so far, in which he has scored 1104 runs at an average of 30.66. But he played his last T20 match for India in the year 2023. Since then, he is struggling to make his place in the team. He could not make his place in the 2024 T20 World Cup and now he has missed making his place in the Asia Cup.
