Chennai: The Northeast monsoon officially withdrew from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today, marking the end of the seasonal rainfall period. The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast dry weather across the state until January 21, followed by a chance of light to moderate rain from January 23 to 25. However, below-normal minimum temperatures and morning fog are expected in many areas, with a frost warning issued for the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal hills.
Weather Outlook
Dry weather is likely across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from January 19 to 21, with light fog possible in some areas during early mornings. Conditions are expected to remain dry on January 22 as well. From January 23 to 25, light to moderate rain may occur in a few places across the region.
Temperature and Frost Alert
Minimum temperatures are expected to remain near or below normal through January 21. A frost warning has been issued for today and tomorrow in the Nilgiris district and Kodaikanal hilly areas of Dindigul district during night and early morning hours, urging residents and travellers to take necessary precautions against the cold.
Chennai Forecast
In Chennai and its suburbs, partly cloudy skies with morning fog are predicted. The maximum temperature will hover around 30–31°C, while minimums will range between 20–21°C.
With the monsoon’s withdrawal, the state now transitions into a cooler, drier phase, though residual showers may return late next week.
