Nobel Peace Prize 2025 awarded to María Corina Machado

New Delhi: The prestigious Nobel Peace Prize 2025 was awarded to María Corina Machado on Friday. The announcement of the award was made by the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo at 09:00 GMT (2:30 PM) IST. The announcements of the Nobel prizes in various categories began on October 6 and will continue till October 13.

The Peace Nobel however is in special focus this time, as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that the prize must be awarded to him for stopping 7 wars across the world.

338 nominations submitted this year

According to reports the Nobel Committee has received a total of 338 nominations for the Peace Prize this year. The nominations include 244 individuals and 94 organisations.

One must note that the Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded in the past on 19 occasions. These included in the years 1914 to 1916, 1918, 1923, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1939–1943, 1948, 1955–1956, 1966–1967 and lastly in 1972.

The award was mostly skipped in the past due to ongoing wars and absence of suitable candidates.

Mahatma Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace honour multiple times. He was nominated in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947, and again in 1948 for his nonviolent leadership of India’s freedom movement. However he did not receive the honour. In 1948, the Nobel committee chose not to award the prize, “citing no suitable living candidate”. This was seen by many as a tribute to the Mahatma, who was shot dead on January 30, 1948.
