Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Galitzine as Prince Adam, who returns to Eternia to embrace his destiny as He-Man and confront the villainous Skeletor. The project spent years in development before finally arriving in theaters on June 5, but audiences have not embraced it in the way many expected.
Several factors may have contributed to the film’s struggles. Its massive budget created an uphill battle from the start, while a marketing campaign that many viewers found inconsistent failed to clearly communicate the movie’s tone. The film also entered theaters during a highly competitive summer season, facing pressure from major franchise releases and the unexpected dominance of horror hits such as Backrooms and Obsession.
The crowded marketplace has left little room for Masters of the Universe to gain momentum. Family audiences have gravitated toward established brands, while other blockbuster offerings have captured the attention of casual moviegoers.
