Neymar Faces Injury Setback Ahead of World Cup Opener for Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Neymar, the 34-year-old forward for Brazil, has sustained a calf injury, casting doubt on his availability for the team’s opening World Cup match against Morocco.

Team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed the injury, which occurred just ten days after Neymar was selected for the World Cup squad.

Lasmar indicated that Neymar is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks, potentially missing the match scheduled for June 13 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Brazil’s group also includes Haiti and Scotland, making Neymar’s absence a significant concern for the team’s strategy.

Injury Details and Recovery Timeline

Neymar arrived at the team’s training base, Granja Comary, on Wednesday, where he underwent medical evaluations. Lasmar stated, “Neymar did all medical tests, and was diagnosed with a grade two calf injury.” This diagnosis suggests a more severe injury that could impact his recovery time.

World Cup Selection Context

Despite concerns over his fitness, Neymar was included in coach Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man World Cup squad. This selection comes after a lengthy absence from the national team due to a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee sustained during a qualifying match against Uruguay in October 2023.

Since returning from a free transfer from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Neymar has participated in only a few matches for Santos this season, raising further questions about his readiness for the World Cup.

FIFA Regulations on Squad Changes

FIFA regulations allow for a player to be replaced up until June 1, or one day prior to the team’s first match. This rule provides Brazil with options should Neymar’s recovery extend beyond the anticipated timeline, allowing them to consider other players for the squad.
