Next generation of Mercedes SL might be more about comfort than performance

New Delhi: Later this year, the Mercedes-AMG SL will be coming, and there is a chance it might be a little softer than the present iteration. The success of the Maybach SL has reportedly made the carmaker consider a slightly different platform for the convertible, which shares it with the GT.

As per the Autocar report, the AMG wants to further distinguish between SL and GT. For this, the convertible will apparently get chassis tuning that changes its driving dynamics and places it more like a grand tourer.

The updated tuning will coincide with new styling, which includes star-shaped headlights and taillights as well. The car will come with a revised bumper, the newest infotainment software, and a new steering wheel, though it’s still unknown whether any Maybach SL features will come down to it.

What could power the Mercedes-AMG SL?

Under the bonnet, the media sources suggest, the SL will ditch the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 416 bhp and replace it with a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six making 449 bhp. The carmaker will also update the available V8 with the one from the new SL, powering the SL 63’s output from 577 bhp to 650 bhp.

Irrespective of how the powertrain reads, each SL will be coming with a mild-hybrid car. It is also unclear if Mercedes will continue to come with the SL 63 SE Performance plug-in hybrid. Mercedes, though making moves to differentiate the SL from the GT, which is logical since the Maybach version had been quite popular.
