Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, shared insights on the pivotal moments that led to his team’s 3-2 defeat in the T20I series against India.
He noted that the series outcome might have been different if New Zealand had seized opportunities in the initial matches held in Christchurch. After their seven-wicket win in the final T20I at Seddon Park on Sunday, Santner emphasized that the series was fiercely contested, highlighting several positives, especially in batting and bowling.
Strategic Adjustments and Future Insights
Discussing the bowling strategy in the last match, Santner mentioned how the bowlers adjusted their tactics after India’s third-wicket partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan shifted the game’s momentum. He remarked, “We mixed it up effectively, especially with the new ball, but Shreyas and Kishan accelerated the scoring. The seamers adapted well with variations in length and line, which provided valuable lessons for us.”
Santner also indicated that the team would draw lessons from this series, particularly with the next opportunity to play in similar conditions likely occurring during a future World Cup. He stated, “The next time we play around this time of year will probably be the World Cup in a couple of years, so we are learning from these experiences now.”
Team Depth and Individual Performances
The New Zealand captain expressed confidence in the team’s bowling depth, noting that player rotation had allowed opportunities for those who typically do not play regularly. “We are in a strong position regarding depth. The schedule has led to more rotation than usual, but it provides chances for fringe players to step up, which is encouraging,” Santner explained.
He also commended Glenn Phillips for his consistent batting throughout the series, highlighting how Phillips’ ability to settle in before playing aggressive shots was crucial for New Zealand. “His performance in every game has been remarkable. He takes his time to get settled and then plays strong shots against a formidable bowling attack. His contributions have been vital, especially with scores around 200 and even 260 in some matches,” he added.
