New Zealand at risk of getting chokers tag if case of T20 World Cup final loss, says Steyn

New Delhi: New Zealand coud get the unwanted “chokers” tag in case they lose to India in the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has said.

New Zealand thrashed South Africa and perennial “chokers” South Africa in the first semi-final in Kolkata while India defeated England in the second last four stage in Mumbai.

It will be the second T20 World Cup final appearance for the Kiwis, while defending champions will be aiming for their third title.

Since New Zealand have been in the final more than South Africa, who lost to India in the 2024 title clash, they could be dubbed “chokers” if they falter on Sunday, having lost in the finals of 2019 ODI World Cup, 2021 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

“Let’s be honest here. Everyone likes to call South Africa chokers, but I am going to say it. New Zealand haven’t won many World Cups themselves, and they have been in more finals than we have. So, no offence, New Zealand, but please go on to win this,” former pace great Steyn said while speaking on AB de Villiers’s YouTube channel.

“Otherwise, I am formally handing over that card to you; it’s yours. I love New Zealand, but they won’t beat India.”

Steyn said India are the overwhelming favourites to retain the title and it will take a “monumental choke” for the hosts to get beaten.

“It would require a monumental choke from India. I am calling it; it’s possible. I really want them (New Zealand) to win, but do I think they’ll beat India? No,” Steyn said.

New Zealand beat India in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2000 and have reached eight ICC finals then, winning only the 2021 World Test Championship final against India.
