Alcohol consumption in Delhi is continuously increasing and the government is directly benefiting from this. This figure is about 12 percent more than the same period last year. This information has been given by the officials of the Excise Department on Saturday. According to the department, the government between April and September last year Liquor A excise revenue of Rs 3,731.79 crore was received from. But this time not only VAT has increased, but there has been a tremendous increase in excise duty.
VAT, tremendous boom in excise duty
In Delhi, not only VAT, but also excise duty has brought a tremendous bounce in the government’s earnings. According to government data, between April and September in FY 2024-25, where revenue of Rs 2,598.04 crore was received from excise duty, it increased to Rs 3,043.39 crore in the same period this year. That is, an increase of about 17 percent has been recorded. Not only this, if we talk about an average excise duty that comes every month, then there has been a big jump in it. Last year, where the monthly average was Rs 279.81 crore, this time it increased to Rs 517.26 crore, ie about 85%. These figures clearly show that the sale of liquor in Delhi is increasing at a high speed at this time.
Sales will increase further in festivals
The Delhi government has set a target of Rs 6,000 crore this year, which was 7,000 crores earlier. According to a senior official of the Excise Department, in the first six months, the government has crossed the mark of Rs 4,192 crore, that is, about 70 percent of the target has been achieved. Now that the festival season has started, it is expected that the sale of liquor will be faster on occasions like Dussehra, Diwali and New Year. Officials believe that due to this increasing consumption, it will not be difficult to cross the target set by the end of the year.
Government working on new excise policy
The Delhi government is currently working on a new excise policy. For this, a high level committee has been formed under the leadership of Public Works Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma. The aim of the government is not just to increase revenue, but to bring a policy that is transparent, in the interest of the people and also keep in mind the social responsibility. Government officials believe that if the policy is clear and permanent then not only will the earnings increase, but the disturbances related to the sale of liquor will also be banned.
